Protecting Michigan’s
Rivers
The Michigan River Alliance (MRA) is a statewide
not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing leadership as
stewards and keepers of the rivers, wetlands and watersheds of
Michigan. The mission of the organization is to unify the voice for
river advocates in Michigan.
Why
we do it
Rivers connect us all. At the Michigan River
Alliance, we work to preserve the our State's river rivers for all
residents and visitors to enjoy. Our activities are based on taking
the necessary action and providing the leadership as stewards and
keepers of the rivers of Michigan.
In 2004, as the idea of MRA was emerging, a survey of river groups
and watershed coalitions all across the state. (PowerPoint show of
results) A key outcome was the recognition of the need to
establish a single organization, focused entirely on river
protection, to work with local partners and provide a statewide
presence on important river issues. In order to meet the demand and
begin giving issues specific to rivers the attention they deserve,
MRA was incorporated.
How
we work
Through advocating for standards to protect water
quality, elevating the issues that impact rivers, and supporting the
efforts of local river and watershed organizations, MRA is about
helping the values residents and visitors to Michigan hold dear. We
believe that local river and watershed organizations are key to
protecting and improving Michigan’s 33,000 miles of rivers. Our
future efforts will focus on helping local organizations have the
greatest impact possible by providing them with timely river
information, directing them to funding opportunities, and responding
to requests for technical and organizational help.
Our volunteer board is geographically diverse and
brings experience and know-how to address many of the issues
impacting Michigan’s rivers.
